Mumbai University to Act Against 156 Affiliated Colleges Over NAAC Non-Compliance!
The University of Mumbai plans to fine 156 affiliated colleges ₹10,000 each for not applying for or renewing their National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) accreditation.
Most of these colleges are private and unaided, with about 65 located in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The university's Management Council has instructed the College Affiliation and Development Department to review these colleges and report by April 20. Colleges that don't respond satisfactorily may be barred from admitting students for the upcoming academic year starting in June, and their pre-registration and pre-admission processes could be halted. The university will also publish a list of these colleges on its official website.
NAAC accreditation is essential for maintaining educational quality and accessing benefits like student scholarships, but some colleges avoid applying due to inadequate infrastructure or fear of receiving a low score, which could affect enrollment.
Although March 2024 was previously set as the deadline and the 'Paris Sparsh' scheme has since been rolled out, 80 colleges still risk fines in April 2025 for failing to form the mandatory College Development Committees.
As the June academic cycle approaches, all eyes are on how these colleges respond—shaping not just their future, but the credibility of higher education in the region.
