NAAC Resets the Rules: Assessors Under Review in Massive Reform Drive!

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) is undertaking a sweeping reform of its accreditation process, with around 1,200 assessors potentially facing removal following an earlier elimination of nearly 800 assessors over the past year. The move is part of NAAC’s broader push to enhance integrity, transparency, and public trust in the higher education accreditation system.

The organization has also revised its criteria for the appointment of new assessors. While earlier guidelines required candidates to be professors with a minimum of five years of experience, the updated framework now mandates a formal recommendation from the head of the institution. This additional layer of accountability ensures that endorsing authorities may also be held responsible in cases where assessors are later found guilty of misconduct—marking a significant step toward more responsible and transparent assessor appointments.

In a parallel development, NAAC is beginning to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its accreditation process. Although still in its initial stages, the incorporation of AI is expected to bring greater efficiency, accuracy, and consistency to the evaluation of higher education institutions (HEIs). Officials anticipate that this technological shift will eventually transform the way accreditations are conducted nationwide.

Moreover, NAAC has initiated a re-evaluation of institutions that have shown unusual improvements in accreditation grades compared to previous cycles. Several HEIs have already been downgraded following re-assessment, underscoring the Council's commitment to awarding higher ratings solely to HEIs that demonstrate authentic progress.

These ongoing reforms signal a decisive effort by NAAC to restore credibility and reinforce quality assurance mechanisms across India's higher education landscape.
