The Haryana state government in India has made it a priority for higher educational institutions to participate in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in order to improve their rankings and gain accreditation. Currently, only a third of the state's institutes have validation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The government is providing incentives to institutions based on their performance in the NAAC and NIRF rankings. Accredited universities are also being asked to mentor newer institutes and improve parameters such as faculty-to-student ratio and industry interaction for placement.
The Haryana State Higher Education Council (HSHEC) has issued an advisory to all the university vice-chancellors for fast tracking self-assessment and weakness elimination in order to improve the rankings and get accreditation in the first attempt.
A state government official claimed that: “Of the state’s 1,172 higher educational institutes, 17 of 57 universities along with 341 of 1,115 colleges are NAAC accredited.”
The official said: “The advisory is based on deliberations with the stakeholders. It recommends how to improve on different judging parameters of NAAC and NIRF. The universities have instructions to hold workshops and handhold their affiliate colleges for achieving this objective of the National Education Policy, 2020.” For formulating this advisory, the HSHEC had brainstormed at Gurugram University with even the vice-chancellors from the other states along with the NAAC chairman, higher education department, college principals, and subject experts.
